The first volleyball World Championships for men was held in 1949 in Prague and in 1952 for women in Moscow. FIVB has since grown into becoming one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world with 222 affiliated bodies.
Volleyball has come a long way from the dusty-old YMCA gymnasium of Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, where the visionary William G. Morgan invented the sport back in 1895. It has seen the start of two centuries and the dawn of a new millennium. Volleyball is now one of the big five international sports, and the FIVB, with its 220 affiliated national federations, is the largest international sporting federation in the world.

1895: William G. Morgan (1870-1942) created the game of volleyball but called the game Mintonette. 1896: The first exhibition match of volleyball is played at Springfield College (called International YMCA Training school in 1896). 1900: A special ball was designed for the sport.
The sport of volleyball originated in the United States, and is now just beginning to achieve the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.
One of the big milestones on the rules timeline is the introduction of a specifically for volleyball designed ball in 1900. In 1912 the amount of players in a team was set at six, which is the same as today. Also the rotation before serve was introduced. 1915 the number of players in a team varies between 2 to 6.

Japan (1962, 1967, 1974) and Cuba (1978, 1994, 1998) with three titles each, plus China (1982, 1986) with two are other multi-champions throughout the history of the competition. Other countries to have struck gold are Italy (2002), USA (2014) and Serbia (2018).
